St. Anthony’s Church

Father Geoffrey’s Diamond Jubilee

Father Geoffrey Nixon celebrated the diamond jubilee of his Priesthood on Friday May 27th. Typically, instead of us giving him a party, his idea was for him to have everyone celebrate with him on the nearest Sunday after the 9.30 Mass.

One picture shows him cutting the cake watched by his Sister - Sister Ann Marie,  a Carmelite Nun from Indiana USA. She is staying over here with him for a while. I gather his other sister, Rosemary, is now in a residential home near London.

Father's brother, John, who has played the organ for us since joining Fr. Geoffrey in Ottery, died during the night of May 26/27, bad timing really but Father went ahead with the celebration on the Sunday. His Sister flew overnight from the USA to be with him.

Fr. Geoffrey is a retired Priest from the diocese of Arundel and Brighton who had endeared himself to us since his move here some few years ago.

Rhoda Reynolds 100th Birthday Celebrations

Rhoda Reynolds started a week of  celebrations after the Saturday Mass to commemorate her 100th Birthday. Her daughter Hannah and all of the family have said ‘thanks to all who helped make it a lovely event, particularly Mary Thomas who made the cakes and to Father Frank who organised it.’

St. Anthony’s Church is about to expand

This year could see the building of an extension to the Church with many improvements to enjoy.

The Church was originally built in 1935 and was then extended in 1982 giving us a much enlarged Nave, also a new side entrance from the car park.

We are indebted to one of our parishioners, Luis Torres* who runs a design consultancy locally. He has drawn up the plans for some major improvements to the church building. This will result in an enhanced atmosphere with better lighting, more natural light over the Altar and safer access to the first floor.

There will also be an enlarged Sacristy, the present Sacristy is thought to be the smallest in the diocese.
